Vergers
Vergers are appointed by, and serve at the pleasure of, the Rector of a Parish. Vergers volunteer their services assisting the clergy in the orderly presentation of worship services and help to ensure those services are conducted in conformity with the rubrics of The Book of Common Prayer, 1979, and the Canons of the Episcopal Church. As lay assistant to the clergy, the verger also helps to oversee the preparations of each service and liturgy in the Church. The Verger is familiar with all parts of the parish facilities, ministries within the parish family, individuals available to assist with problems and needs, and the history and development of the church and its community.
Since the early days of the church, lay persons have been commissioned to assist the Clergy and the Laity in the Divine Liturgy. The position of Verger developed in Medieval England where the Verger was "the protector of the procession." When asked to serve today, the Verger is responsible for all things temporal regarding the orderly process of worship services and is generally trained to and able to carry out any duties of other lay persons involved in the service.
